Help with Ion.

Answers for the Ion app on iPhone, the hub on your computer and your Ion account, including how to delete it. Stuck? Email hello@useion.ai and a person will answer.

What Ion is

Ion runs open-source apps on a computer you own, called your hub: a Mac or Linux computer that stays on. The apps and their data live on that computer, not in our cloud.

The Ion app for iPhone (called Ion Apps before) opens the apps on the hubs you own or were invited to, full screen, with home-screen widgets and notifications. Your Ion account is what links you to those hubs, and it works the same in the app and at account.useion.ai.

How Ion works →

How do I sign in?

Open the Ion app and sign in with your email address, and we’ll email you a one-time code to type in. You can also sign in with Apple, Google or GitHub. It’s the same Ion account on every device and at account.useion.ai.

No code? Check your spam folder, make sure the address is spelled right, and ask for a new code after a minute. Codes expire, so use the newest one.

Where is my hub?

Your hubs appear in the app once your account is linked to them. There are two ways in:

  • Someone invited you: open the invitation link on your iPhone, or sign in with the email address the invitation was sent to and accept it.
  • It’s your own hub: in the app, open Settings → Link or add a hub, and enter the link code your hub shows.

A hub runs on its owner’s computer, so that computer has to be on and online for the hub’s apps to open. If a hub won’t load, ask its owner to check it’s running.

How do I install apps?

The owner of a hub installs apps from the App Library, in the Ion app or on the hub’s own page. Everyone the owner invited can open the apps installed there.

Each app asks for the permissions it needs, like reading another app’s data or sending notifications, and nothing is granted until the owner approves it. The owner can take a permission back or uninstall the app at any time.

How do I add the widgets?

Ion has two home-screen widgets: Apps, the apps on your hubs, where a tap opens one full screen, and Notifications, the latest notifications from those apps.

  1. Touch and hold an empty spot on your home screen until the icons jiggle.
  2. Tap Edit, then Add Widget, and search for Ion.
  3. Pick Apps or Notifications, choose a size and tap Add Widget.

Why am I not getting notifications?

Apps on your hubs send notifications through your Ion account to every iPhone signed in to it. If they aren’t arriving:

  • Allow them in iPhone Settings → Notifications → Ion.
  • In the Ion app’s Settings, check that the hub, or that one app, isn’t muted.
  • Make sure the hub’s computer is on: a hub that is off can’t send anything.

Where is my data?

On the hub. Your apps and everything in them stay on the computer the hub runs on. Our account service keeps only what it needs to sign you in and reach your hubs: your email addresses, your sessions and devices, and which hubs you belong to.

For App Store reviewers: what is review mode?

The demo account in the review notes signs in to a hub we run for App Review, set up in review mode. The banner “Review hub: some settings are locked” says you’re on it.

In review mode, owner actions that would reach past the hub are locked, the App Library offers a curated set of apps rather than the whole registry, and AI features run on a small hourly and daily budget. The hub is reset every night.

The review account can’t be deleted, so it doesn’t pull the hub out from under the next review: Delete Account explains that and keeps you signed in. To see deletion itself, sign in with an account of your own and follow the steps below.

Delete your account

You can delete your Ion account in the app or on the web. It can’t be undone.

  1. In the Ion app: open Settings, and under Ion account tap Delete Account. Read what goes, type DELETE and tap Delete Account.
  2. On the web: sign in at account.useion.ai/account, find “Delete this account”, type DELETE and choose Delete my account.

This deletes your Ion account, its email addresses and sessions, your hub memberships and invitations, your devices’ link to the account and their notifications, and your sign-in with Apple, Google or GitHub.

Hubs, and their apps and data, stay on the computer they run on, because we never had them. A hub you own keeps running with no owner in Ion until you link it to another account. Deleting its data is up to you, on that computer.

If you signed in with Apple, you can also take Ion off your Apple ID: iPhone Settings → your name → Sign in with Apple, choose Ion and tap Stop Using Apple ID.

Can’t sign in any more? Email hello@useion.ai from the address on the account and we’ll delete it for you.
