Terms

Terms of use.

The rules for your Ion account, the hub you run and the apps you install, in plain language. Questions? Email hello@useion.ai.

Draft: these terms are awaiting legal review and may change before they are final. If a change matters, we’ll tell you before it takes effect.

Who these terms are with

These terms are an agreement between you and Contextual Labs Ltd., a Canadian company (“we”, “us”). They cover your Ion account and account.useion.ai, the Ion apps for iPhone and Mac, the Ion hub software you run on your own computer, and the Ion app registry, the catalogue of apps you install from.

By creating an account or using any of these, you agree to these terms. If you don’t agree, don’t use them. Ion is early software in free early access.

Your account

  • You must be at least 13, and old enough where you live to agree to these terms yourself.
  • Give a real email address you can read, and keep your sign-in methods secure. You’re responsible for what happens under your account.
  • An account is for one person. Tell us at once if you think someone else is using yours.

Acceptable use

Don’t use Ion, its account service or its registry to:

  • break the law or anyone’s rights, including privacy and intellectual-property rights;
  • get into a hub, an account or data you haven’t been given access to;
  • attack, overload, probe or get around the limits of our services;
  • send spam or abusive messages, including through notifications;
  • publish malware, or an app that hides what it does, to the registry.

We may remove content and suspend accounts that do these things.

Your hub and the apps you install

Your hub runs on a computer you own and control, so you are its administrator. You decide which apps to install, which permissions to grant, who to invite and whether to make an app reachable from the internet. You’re responsible for those choices, for the people you invite, and for keeping your own backups.

The apps in the registry are open-source software, most of it written by people other than us, and each comes under its own licence. We check what we list, but we don’t guarantee any app, and you install them at your own discretion.

The hub software is source-available: its licence lets you read and run it, but not host it and resell it as a service. That licence, not these terms, governs what you may do with its code.

Publishing to the registry

If you publish an app, it stays yours. You confirm you have the right to publish it under the licence it names, and you let us list it, show its name, icon and description, and deliver it to the people who install it.

We may decline or remove a listing that breaks these terms or puts people at risk.

AI on your own plan

Ion’s AI features run on your own Claude or ChatGPT plan, which you sign in to on Anthropic’s or OpenAI’s own page. Your use of that plan is also covered by their terms, and any limits or charges are theirs. We never hold your AI credentials.

AI makes mistakes. Check what it tells you, and preview a change to an app before you keep it.

Your content

What you keep in your apps is yours, and it stays on your hub. We don’t claim any rights to it. The little we hold to run your account is described in the privacy policy.

If you got Ion from the App Store

These terms are between you and us, not Apple. Apple isn’t responsible for the Ion app or its support, and has no obligation to maintain it. If the app fails to match a warranty the law gives you, you may tell Apple, and Apple may refund what you paid for it, if anything; beyond that, Apple has no warranty obligation. Apple isn’t responsible for claims about the app, including product liability, legal compliance or intellectual-property claims.

Apple and its subsidiaries are third-party beneficiaries of these terms and may enforce them against you. You confirm you aren’t in a country under a U.S. embargo and aren’t on a U.S. list of prohibited parties.

Changes to Ion

Ion is early and will change. We may add, change or remove features, and pause or stop parts of the service. Ion is free during early access; if we ever charge for something, we’ll tell you the price before you pay anything.

No warranty

Ion is provided “as is” and “as available”, without warranties of any kind, as far as the law allows. We don’t promise it will be uninterrupted, error-free or secure, or that it won’t lose data. Anything connected to the internet carries some risk.

Limits on our liability

As far as the law allows, we aren’t liable for indirect, incidental, special or consequential losses, or for lost data, profits or revenue. Our total liability for any claim about Ion is limited to the greater of what you paid us in the 12 months before it and 100 Canadian dollars.

Nothing in these terms takes away rights that consumer law where you live gives you and doesn’t allow to be waived.

Ending your account

You can stop using Ion and delete your account at any time, in the app under Settings → Delete Account, or at account.useion.ai/account. Deleting it removes your account from our service; your hubs and their data stay on your computer.

We may suspend or close an account that seriously or repeatedly breaks these terms, and will tell you why unless the law or someone’s safety stops us. The sections on your hub, warranty, liability and governing law still apply after an account ends.

Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of the Province of Alberta and the federal laws of Canada that apply there, and disputes go to the courts of Alberta, unless the consumer law where you live gives you the right to use your own courts and laws.

Changes to these terms

If we change these terms, we’ll update this page and the date below. If a change matters, we’ll tell you by email or in the app before it takes effect. Using Ion after that means you accept the new terms.
